Righteousness by Faith

Reaction to the incredible practice of literally buying forgiveness for sin from the Roman Catholic Church at the turn of the sixteenth century was one of the factors that sparked the Protestant Reformation. At the time, the Catholic Church was bleeding central Europe dry of funds for the building of St. Peter's in Rome. The story of a man buying such an indulgence for the sin of stealing from the very one who sold them has become famous.

The realization of righteousness by faith began with Luther in his visit to Rome. Luther was shocked by the ostentation and the corruption of the priesthood on all levels. While climbing Pilate's staircase on his knees to gain an indulgence himself, he was suddenly overwhelmed by the Bible text ”The just shall live by faith.” He got up from his knees and began the Reformation in Germany on that principle.

One should always remember that it was the experience of seeing sin, the transgression of the ten commandments, in the church, that inspired the realization of righteousness by faith. The idea that faith in Christ without obedience to the law can bring salvation is diametrically opposed to Luther's experience and teaching, to say nothing of Paul's.

But righteousness by faith did not begin with Luther and his realization that adoration of saints' images and relicts, acts of prostration in churches, fasting, belief in purgatory, and dozens of others forms of holiness could save no one. Nor did the concept of righteousness by faith begin with Paul in the New Testament. The book of Genesis is structured around this grand truth from the very day of Adam and Eve's expulsion from Eden through Abraham's great declaration of faith to Joseph's recognition of divine providence. Salvation has always been a gift of divine grace, not something earned by human efforts.

The masthead of the Review and Herald magazine for years had a summary of doctrinal statements:

The Bible, and the Bible alone, the rule of faith and duty.

The Law of God, as taught in the Old and New Testaments, unchangeable.

The Personal Advent of Christ, and the Resurrection of the Just, before the Millennium.

The Earth restored to its Eden perfection and glory, the final Inheritance of the Saints.

Immortality alone through Christ, to be given to the Saints at the Resurrection.

The baptism, life, death, resurrection and ascension of Christ into the heavenly sanctuary to intercede for the faithful and make an atonement for sin is not expressed here. Of course, they believed these things. But the fact that they were left out of the summary left a gap between the Law of God and the second coming of Christ. This contributed to preaching that neglected these truths. This lack was brought to the attention of believers in the 1888 General Conference in Minneapolis, where elders Waggoner and Jones preached the message of Righteousness by faith.

Much has been written on the subject of righteousness by faith. Much that has been written is unfortunate speculation.

”Many commit the error of trying to define minutely the fine points of distinction between justification and sanctification. Into the definitions of these two terms they often bring their own ideas and speculations. Why try to be more minute than is Inspiration on the vital question of righteousness by faith?

”As the penitent sinner, contrite before God, discerns Christ's atonement in his behalf, and accepts this atonement as his only hope in this life and the future life, his sins are pardoned. This is justification by faith.

”Sanctification is not the work of a moment, an hour, a day, but of a lifetime. It is not gained by a happy flight of feeling, but is the result of constantly dying to sin, and constantly living for Christ. Wrongs cannot be righted nor reformations wrought in the character by feeble, intermittent efforts. It is only by long, persevering effort, sore discipline, and stern conflict, that we shall overcome.

”It {sanctification} is not merely a theory, an emotion, or a form of words, but a living, active principle, entering into the everyday life. It requires that our habits of eating, drinking, and dressing be such as to secure the preservation of physical, mental, and moral health, that we may present to the Lord our bodies--not an offering corrupted by wrong habits but--'a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God.'

”The Scriptures are the great agency in the transformation of character. . . . If studied and obeyed, the Word of God works in the heart, subduing every unholy attribute.

”There is no such thing as instantaneous sanctification. True sanctification is a daily work, continuing as long as life shall last.” Ellen G. White, The Faith I Live By, page 116.

This text gives valuable advice and information, indeed, a summary of the whole issue in a nutshell. First of all, it shows that the Bible says about the subject is sufficient, and we should be satisfied with that, and not engage in further speculation. Speculation is an important human activity, but it is not appropriate in all situations. This is one of those when speculation is not appropriate. At the same time, the text shows that righteousness by faith consists of justification and sanctification.

Justification is defined as the experience of penitance. That is, it can exist only under the condition of contemplating the law, the ten commandments, which define what sin is. Pardon for sin occurs when the penitent and contrite sinner accepts the atonement of Christ. Sanctification is rather a more complex and less precisely defined thing. It is the lifelong transformation of character that takes place when one studies and obeys the word of God. That word works in the heart, subduing every unholy attribute. Both are divine acts, but they are acts that require the human cooperation of laying hold on the atonement with faith, and daily coming to the word of God. It is in the defining of what is divine part and what is human part, what belongs to justification and what belongs to sanctification that leads to unwarrented speculation. The best attitude is to get at it and leave the arguments aside.

The words faith and righteousness are used together in only a few texts. But they refer to the very beginning of the Bible. The first person who is said to have attained to righteousness by faith is Abel. ”By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.” Hebrews 11:4. Nearly all of these texts are found in the Pauline epistles. But Peter also joins the terms faith and righteousness. ”Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:1. It is worth noting that our faith lays hold, not on some supposed righteousness of our own, but on the righteousness of God Himself. Paul also introduces his discussion of righteousness by faith with the same point. ”For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.” Romans 1:17. Paul goes on to make the point that the righteousness of God, being the only righteousness to be obtained, is not limited to any certain group of people. That is an obvious conclusion, if the righteousness is not human righteousness but divine. ”Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference.” Romans 3:22.

It is established that only God's righteousness is effective, and that it is accessible to all people without distinction. But it is not yet seen how that righteousness is transmitted to humankind. The process is described next. ”Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God.” Romans 3:24, 25.

The human mind is so perverse that it naturally runs to the question of what a person must do. The contemplation of so-called works arises already in Paul's writings. ”But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.” Romans 4:5. But what exactly the works are that are futile are a matter of argument. In Luther's time, it was a matter of unscriptural ritual, for the most part. At the time of Paul, the burning question in Judaism was whether an adult convert must be circumcized on conversion. Consequently, this quarrel spilled over into the early church as well. ”Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.” Romans 4:9. Paul takes the example of Abraham. ”And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also.” Romans 4:11. Interestingly enough, Paul evades the issue of good deeds as works altogether and focuses on the opening of righteousness by faith to all humankind. Again, the focus of the promise is not to humankind as such, as that would imply works, but to the seed of Abraham, that is to Christ, who is the heir of the world. The opening of salvation to all men is not in function of all men, but in function of the heritage that Christ has won. This is the logical reason behind the ineffectiveness of works. ”For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.” Romans 4:13. ”What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.” Romans 9:30. Works are really defined, as through circumcision, as belonging to a particular people instead of merely to the believers of all peoples whom Christ inherits. The aspect of divinely appointed kingship in regard to righteousness by faith has been greatly neglected, and that also explains the skewed view which speculates on the relationship of works to faith that Ellen White deplores above.

Given that righteousness by faith is the legal heritage of Jesus, who inherits the world, conquers death, and becomes the fountain of life, it depends directly on the human relation to Christ's resurrection. ”But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise,... The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Romans 10:6,8-10.

Paul gives a briefer exposition of the issue to the Galatians. ”For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.” Galatians 5:5.

Both in Romans and Galatians Paul relegates one's own ineffectual righteousness to that of the law. The context is of course the first century Jewish accommodation to Rome, by which the law is emphasized, and thus skewed and abused. The two strands of Israelite faith were the law and the divinely appointed, the Messiah figure. The Romans were very sensitive to any rival to Caesar. For survival the Jews focused on the law and laid aside the Messiah. The Pharisees did this by rabbinical method, the scholarly application of the law to all aspects of life. The Sadducees did this by what they thought was a literal application of the law, but which limited it to the stated areas, leaving the rest of life open to compromise with Rome. Thus, both advocated a righteousness of the law that denied Christ. At the same time, the kingly role of the Messiah is central. Paul is really the champion, not of a new faith, but of conservative Israelite faith, faith that was absolutely loyal to the appointed ruler, the divinely established king. This appears in summary in Philippians 3:9. ”And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith.”

But that does not relieve people of their moral obligations any more after the coming of Christ than it did before he came, or earlier under the messiahs of the kingdom of Israel or even earlier under the messiahs of the judges and patriarchal period. All of the earlier messiahs or anointed ones could provide only earthly, physical satisfaction. The literal keeping of the ten commandments was both the means and the end. But keeping the commandments could not keep people from dying. Christ could and does provide eternal life. He does not provide less than the Old Testament messiahs, who provided the means for keeping the ten commandments. But he provides more. He provides eternal life for those whom he inherits through his conquering of death. So in writing to Timothy Paul combines the terms of righteousness and faith with those of godliness, love, patience, and meekness. ”But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.” 1 Timothy 6:11.

The positive virtues are complemented by fleeing sin. ”Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” 2 Timothy 2:22. A full theology of righteousness by faith is thus found merely by examining the less than a score of texts that mention the words righteousness by faith directly.

Perhaps no figure of righteousness by faith is more compelling than that of the ark. Those who kept the law perfectly, but failed to enter the ark, drowned along with the outright sinners. Nothing can more vividly and eloquently express why and how righteousness by faith is not by the works of the law. ”By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.” Hebrew 11:7.

The Bible and the Bible Alone, the Rule of Faith and Duty

When the editor of the Advent Review and Sabbath Heraldtranslating and distributing the Bible is one of the largest concerted human efforts of all time. placed this phrase on the masthead of the paper in August 1854 as the first principle of doctrine taught by the paper, he certainly did not realize how popular the Bible would be 150 years later. Today no book approaches it in sales. It is translated into 438 languages (the New Testament into an incredible 1,168) and the numbers are already outdated before they are written down. The work of

Professional specialization in the study and propagation of the Bible is the largest and essentially the oldest educated profession. In the present sceptical age it still ranks first. No other area of scholarship can compete with Bible-related studies, and churches multiply through every city in the world.

The Bible is the only religious classic that is and has long been accessible to nearly the entire population of the globe. That fact alone is a powerful argument in its favour. If there is a God who has revealed his will to humankind in a book, it stands to reason that book would be widely available. No other religious book even begins to compete with the Bible in accessibility.

While other religious books are of long-standing influence, they fail in such accessibility. The Chinese classics are largely known only in China. The same can be said for the Vedic literature, which is mostly known only by the priestly caste of India. Furthermore, such books, especially the Vedas, are practically impossible to translate, since they depend so heavily on puns and word-play. Even the Qur'an loses most of its charm and much of its meaning in translation. Only the Bible is susceptible to clear and effective translation to other languages, making it accessible to all.

Historical criticism of the Bible text has produced a mass of research detail that has given ammunition to those who wish to attack the Bible and claim that it is corrupted. But the fact is that the mass of research proves just one thing. No book of antiquity has been preserved so well as the Bible, which exists in thousands of ancient manuscripts and manuscript fragments. Those who criticize the details are failing to see the forest for the trees, the miracle of the preservation of the Bible. It is unique in history.

A number of arguments can be made for the validity of the Bible. Archaeology has proven it correct time and again. The Ebla, Nuzi, and Mari tablets have silenced critics of the Bible in regard to the patriarchal period. Advances in history consistently show the Bible correct. The Assyrian king Sargon was unknown, except in the Bible, until the discovery of his palace in Khorsabad, Iraq, which even confirmed his conquest of Ashdod as reported in Isaiah 20. Fulfilment of Bible prophecies adds to the believer's assurance. The prophecy upon which most others is founded is the prediction of the return from Babylonian captivity at the end of seventy years in Jeremiah 29:9-12. The book of Daniel is based on that prophecy and is remarkable in its prediction of the course of events from that time to the very days we live in.

But archaeology, history and prophecy are neither unique to the Bible nor central to its message. What is most important is that the Bible is a book that contains the revelation of the will of God for humankind. It tells us what we need to know to live as God wants us to.

Catholic, Orthodox and Oriental Christian churches make the Bible, along with tradition, a source of doctrine and practice. They claim that the Bible can be interpreted only by the church, and require people to conform to the church's reading of the Bible. Historically, they have relied heavily on allegorical readings, which of course no one could come up with unless the church guided them. But anyone reading the Bible can see that it is a straight-forward book that can be understood for the most part by anyone with a grade-school education.

A central principle of Protestantism has been to reject tradition and accept the Bible only as the source of doctrine and practice. But Protestantism stopped at merely reforming a few of the most obvious excesses of Christianity. It still contains many non-Biblical teachings based on human traditions, such as Sunday worship and the annual festivals of the church, the belief in the Trinity, and the belief in the Atonement finished on the cross. All of these beliefs have remarkable parallels in ancient paganism and can be proven from the Bible only by forcing the texts. The Protestant failure to use the Bible only, and to reject the pagan elements in the church, has resulted in the confusion that is Christianity today.

Many people have despaired of ever making sense of the confusion. But the confusion can be dispelled by a systematic and careful reading of the Bible. By using rational, literalist, and systematic rules of interpretation, the central issues of the Bible message become clear. However, it is not something that can be accomplished by one individual alone. A simple, logical and systematic system of Biblical beliefs was achieved by a group of Bible students in 1848 and the following years by applying a special list of rules of interpretation coupled with fervent prayer and fasting, and confirmed by the testimony of Ellen White, whose visions guided and comforted believers after the Great Disappointment of 1844. The fourteen rules of interpretation used by William Miller and applied in the Sabbath Conferences and later. These principles for reading the Bible are just as valuable today as ever. They are reasonable and understandable. Those who agree to apply them will find that all significant disagreement about the Bible and what it means will disappear.

But the unique feature of the Bible is the fact that it alone claims that God has spoken to humankind audibly, directly, and publicly. While the Bible is filled with appearances of angels, dreams and visions, as well as prophets and leaders claiming to speak on behalf of God, we do not need to take such things on trust. No other religious classic claims to contain the very words of God spoken directly and publicly to millions of people so that each one could hear and know the message for himself. Jesus is proclaimed to be the beloved son, in whom God is well pleased, on at least three occasions. But the witnesses were few at those events. Nothing compares to the giving of the ten commandments on Mount Sinai, when millions of people from the major center of civilization of that day, Egypt, heard and understood the voice of God directly and audibly.

Since the Bible contains the ten commandments, it is a unique book. No other classical book of religion makes such claims at all, claims to direct and public revelation. So there are no competitors. On the basis of the most objective criteria to be found, it is only reasonable to take the Bible into consideration in what we believe and do.

God has kept me here for a reason

Repeat after me: God has kept me here for a reason. I survived because
He has a plan for me All my bad relationships, the bad credit, the
repossessions, the death of my loved ones, the back stabbing from my
friends, the negative thoughts, or the lack of support; I made it
because I am blessed!
I release and let go of all past hurts, misunderstandings
and grudges because I am blessed! I recognize them as the illusions
they are, for God is all there is. All else is a lie!

Now give yourself a hug, wipe your tears and walk in victory!!!!!!!! I
love you, but more appropriately God loves you BEST! Be blessed and
know that you are at one with THE SPIRIT OF THE LIVING GOD!

And may the Lord keep watch between you and me when we are away from
each other. Genesis 31:49. Amen!

Now since you are a true child of God, you know that with every
blessing, a blessing is required! So bless another, by
passing this on.

IF YOU DO IT RIGHT, GOD WILL BLESS IT RIGHT!!
Be Blessed

VOWS

By Brother Ishmael from Shabab Friends Church

Sunday 21st June 2009

(All quotations from New King James Version)

Genesis 28:19-22 (NKJV) “And he called the name of that place Bethel; but the name of that city had been Luz previously. Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give me bread to eat and clothing to put on, "so that I come back to my father’s house in peace, then the LORD shall be my God. "And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to you.”

A vow is a promise or an oath you give to God or someone. When a vow is given to God, it is binding. When we own up our promises to God, He really blesses us abundantly and expands our territories. People often vow knowingly and unknowingly thus in one way or another, we have all vowed to God. Sometimes we vow when hard situations are on our sides, or when hard times arise.

Judges 11:29-40 “Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh, and passed through Mizpah of Gilead; and from Mizpah of Gilead he advanced toward the people of Ammon. And Jephthah made a vow to the LORD, and said, "If You will indeed deliver the people of Ammon into my hands, "then it will be that whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the people of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD’S, and I will offer it up as a burnt offering." So Jephthah advanced toward the people of Ammon to fight against them, and the LORD delivered them into his hands. And he defeated them from Aroer as far as Minnith––twenty cities––and to Abel Keramim, with a very great slaughter. Thus the people of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel. When Jephthah came to his house at Mizpah, there was his daughter, coming out to meet him with timbrels and dancing; and she was his only child. Besides her he had neither son nor daughter. And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he tore his clothes, and said, "Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low! You are among those who trouble me! For I have given my word to the LORD, and I cannot go back on it." So she said to him, "My father, if you have given your word to the LORD, do to me according to what has gone out of your mouth, because the LORD has avenged you of your enemies, the people of Ammon." Then she said to her father, "Let this thing be done for me: let me alone for two months, that I may go and wander on the mountains and bewail my virginity, my friends and I." So he said, "Go." And he sent her away for two months; and she went with her friends, and bewailed her virginity on the mountains. And it was so at the end of two months that she returned to her father, and he carried out his vow with her which he had vowed. She knew no man. And it became a custom in Israel that the daughters of Israel went four days each year to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.”

In this extract, we see Jephthah vowing before God, that if the Lord will make sure he goes and comes back from the war, he will give God anything that first comes from his house. In the end however low he was it being that he had to sacrifice the daughter, he had to act according to the word that he had given to the Lord. Also we as Christians we need to act according to the word that comes from your mouth. We sometimes make vows and when we find that things that are dear to us are to be given to the Lord we negate our vows.

Deuteronomy 23:21-22 “When thou shalt vow a vow unto the LORD thy God, thou shalt not slack to pay it: for the LORD thy God will surely require it of thee; and it would be sin in thee. But if thou shalt forbear to vow, it shall be no sin in thee.”

When we do not own up our vows The Lord will have no pleasure in us. Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 “When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed. Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.” When you do not fulfill your vow the Lord calls you a fool. Imagine with our highest intelligence we are fools before God then how will it be when the Lord knows you are a fool but he calls you a fool! It means you are worse than the fool you know!

When we do not fulfill our vows the Lord will curse us. Malachi 1:14 "But cursed be the deceiver Who has in his flock a male, And takes a vow, But sacrifices to the Lord what is blemished––For I am a great King," Says the LORD of hosts, "And My name is to be feared among the nations.” We should own up or vows so that the Lord will be pleased with us and not curse us.

He Whispered

He entered my life like a whisper. I needed a whisper.

It was soft, tender, and hardly noticeable. His whisper made my heart race and stand still at the same time. It flowed into my ears, audible but silent and flowed through my mind as redeeming love, grace, forgiveness, reassurance and mercy and then flowed out of my eyes as tears of joy. He tells me to let it flow out and show out in my life by showing redeeming love, grace, forgiveness, reassurance and mercy to others.

I thought I had used up all of the mercy that was coming my way. I was sure had used up all of the grace I could ever hope for.

I opened my mouth to shout and thank God for the whisper.

The whispers never stop. Can you hear Him? Would you like to hear Him? He whispers in His word.

1Kings 19:12-14 And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice….,And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?
